【Famous Medical Practitioner's Heritage】William Hsia's Letter of Apprenticeship
Respected Dr. Wu,
I, William Hsia, have been your student since 2020 and your patient as well. In 2019, I was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, an autoimmune disorder. At that time, I sought help through Western medicine to no avail and also consulted other Chinese physicians, yet none could offer effective treatment. By fate, I was blessed to meet you, Dr. Wu, and my journey toward healing and renewal began.
Since 2021, my condition has gradually entered remission. Remarkably, throughout the entire process, I have never met you in person; our communication has been solely through phone calls and messages. You prescribed herbal medicine that suited my needs, but more precious than the herbs was the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine and the philosophy of nourishing life that you imparted to me. Because of these teachings, I have regained both my health and dignity.
As the saying goes, “The master opens the door, but the cultivation depends on the student.” You have guided me with compassion and insight whenever I was lost or uncertain.
I no longer view Chinese medicine merely as a medical treatment, but as a way of living and being. In the depths of my illness, I placed my full trust in your guidance, diligently studied the classical teachings, and devoted myself to the wisdom you shared. Through faith and perseverance, I have gradually recovered.
You often remind us to look within and ask, “Who am I?” To truly understand who I am, I must first recognize who I am not. Through your teachings, I have learned to separate body and mind from illusion and attachment, and to rediscover the true self. This awareness has allowed me to remain calm and grateful even in the face of illness.
I understand that the path of learning has no end. No matter what challenges I may face in life and health, I will continue to cultivate myself, to uphold and pass on the principles of Fengyang Traditional Chinese Medicine, and to help others find balance and well-being.
With this letter of apprenticeship, I express my deepest gratitude. I vow to honor your teachings through lifelong study, cultivation, and compassionate service.
Your disciple,
William Hsia
With deepest respect and reverence.
